Six Months in Buffalo

Well, the end of April marks an official six months that we have been in Buffalo. I have a lot of feelings about where I am in my life and where it’s headed. So, I figured, why not share my experiences with my blog readers. (Hiiii… I know there’s like, a couple of you!)

Let’s start with the downside of my experiences so far. First off… Winter. Oh my gosh, I know most of the U.S. has had a real go of it this winter and I felt it for sure. Unfortunately, our apartment doesn’t really get a lot of sunlight to begin with and during a very dark, dreary season, that’s not great. I found myself for the first time in my life, really dealing with the ‘winter blues’.

We got to Buffalo on the first of November and I immediately began searching for a job. I’ve spent six months applying for every job I’m qualified for – and I have had a total of zero interviews since I got here. It’s stressful, to say the least. I went from working 40+ hours a week with a salary to working 0 hours a week and no money.

I left my job for a number of reasons, of course, because my fiance got a job here but also because I had been wanting to leave my job for a while. I wasn’t happy in my job, there were many reasons. (What they don’t mention in the Equal Pay movement is that you may not be able to find work easily once you leave, especially when you’re in a specialized field).

I am still looking for a steady income and I am trying to take a step back from the job search to reassess what I want, and where I want to take my career. It’s difficult and extremely stressful but we are making it work! Plus, we’re finding time to connect with each other, meet new people, and explore our city – finally, the weather is turning and we can get out there!

So… let’s get on with some positive things that have happened. First, I joined the Buffalo Blogging Network and have been attending monthly meetups and events. I have gotten to know some really awesome people and am excited to continue to grow relationships within this group. I’ve also made some friends through my fiance and his job, and we love exploring the city with them.

Food. Drinks… Okay, the food scene in Buffalo is amazing. And, don’t even get me started on the cocktails and beer. So many breweries are in the area, and so many restaurants have great mixologists. I’ve gained like ten pounds this winter and I’m paying for it now. I hate working out… but apparently, I need to take it up if I’m gonna continue living in this food-rich city.

So, there have been ups and there have been downs since moving to a new city. I definitely miss my Toledo family and friends SO SO MUCH. But, we are trying to build a life here and fill it with awesome people and experiences. I’m gonna keep trying to live my best life and I’m excited to share with you along the way.
