Bye 2017, Hello 2018!

Well, another year has passed and for many (including myself), this past year was filled with plenty of ups and downs. 2017 felt like a literal rollercoaster for me. Here is a little recap and some thoughts on where I’m going for this coming year.

I started the year with a lot of hopes for moving forward and growing in my career, however, I quickly found my work environment becoming toxic – lots of people were unhappy, including myself and it became increasingly clear that I would not be able to grow in that organization. I felt stifled, under appreciated, and needed to get out after spending seven years trying to grow with that organization – the realization came that I had actually grown apart from them.

Even though it’s a totally normal thing to happen in a career, I spent a lot of time really stressed and upset about it. I had literally grown up with that organization – having spent my entire childhood learning through and with them about art, and community. It was devastating for me to realize that at this time in my life, I needed new professional experiences. There was a lot of back and forth between my fiancé and I about where to go, but it just so happened to work out that he was offered a fantastic opportunity in Buffalo, NY just a month before our lease was up.

This was one of the most exciting moments for us, but I was (and still am) terrified, that I left my career behind in hopes that I would find something, and while I’m still looking and it’s hella stressful, I’m trying to remain positive and hopeful about this new city and what it could offer us. Plus, it has given me the opportunity to start writing more, and using my blog as a platform to share my life with all of you! I’m so hopeful that I can meet more people through blogging, and writing!

So, on top of these crazy life changes in 2017 I also got to welcome my handsome and sweet nephew into the world, collaborate with my fiancé on our first work of art as Why/Co Studio, and then see it auctioned off for the Toledo Arts Commission annual fundraiser, meet and work with some amazing artists as curator of an artist in residency program, make new and awesome friends, celebrate my soon to be brother and sister-in-law’s wedding, eat crazy delicious ramen in Nashville, go on a crazy amazing road trip to Denver (with dog in tow), started hiking and really enjoying it.

After moving to Buffalo, my fiancé and I celebrated our two year anniversary, made our first Thanksgiving dinner in our new apartment, celebrated my 31st birthday (which was also on Thanksgiving), and then… got engaged (guys, all this happened within one week – it was crazy).

We have also gotten to explore a bit of Buffalo including their amazing art museum – The Albright-Knox Gallery, eat tons of food (chicken wings is literally our favorite food), drink amazing cocktails, and we are just beginning to experience what a Buffalo winter is all about – and it’s only the beginning. Luckily, I got a new coat and winter boots for Christmas this year!

I am so excited to continue to grow and share with you all. I hope in 2018 we can make connections, have conversations, and grow positively together. So, CHEERS to 2018 – enjoy some photos of my favorite parts of the year!
